He he, see what I did there with that title? Here is a behind the scenes look at a “product” in development for Sami’s Sweets. Of course, I have the cake pops on lock. They are my number 1 favorite treat to make. But I would like to have some larger offerings for special occasions and cookie cake is THE ONE. I don’t ever see myself doing custom cakes (never say never). I really want to concentrate on offering amazing cake pops and baked goods – the kinds of things grandma used to bake. But I want one larger offering… so I am on the hunt for a great cookie cake, thus, naming this the Cookie Cake Chronicles. Here is part 1!

I am setting out to find the most amazing cookie cake recipe. My hope is that I can offer a great custom cookie cake option. There are very few stores that do a cookie cake really well. I am looking for something chonky, that holds it’s shape well, that doesn’t taste too dried out, that’s not too crumbly, that’s chewy… and most of all, tastes incredible. I personally LOVE The Great American Cookie Company’s cookie cake, but it’s a lot thinner than I want to bake.
It may be a situation where I find the perfect recipe out there and can recreate it step by step exactly as given. Or it may be a situation where I find one that I love, but tweak it slightly. I set out on this journey this weekend. I even purchased a recipe – GASP! I thought it would be promising.
This one however, was a disaster! It looked pretty, the recipe was easy to follow. But the dark brown sugar the recipe called for was completely overpowering. It was not a win for us. I had a friend try it and she could immediately taste the espresso powder so all around it was just not it. I will keep the creator of the recipe confidential to protect the innocent.
It was really good practice all around so I will chalk the whole experience up to “practice” and I will move on to another recipe.

I was also woefully unprepared. I didn’t have anything big enough to set the cake on when I took it out of the pan, so I just flipped the pan over! LOL It worked well enough for the time being. I will need some cake boards and big enough boxes at some point. For now, I am just using what I have.
I tried out a Russian piping tip for the first time to try and create a flower. I see the potential but it was very difficult for me to use. I need more practice on all fronts.
After my disaster baking experiment, I searched the internet for more potential cookie cakes. And I will probably try another one early next month. Part 1 of the Cookie Cake Chronicals coming soon!
